As a young student, when I first learned about Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, I was instantly drawn to his life. Here was a man who, despite all odds, reached heights that few could have imagined. From being the son of a humble fisherman in Rameswaram to becoming India's Missile Man and the People's President, Dr. Kalam’s journey is not just inspirational but transformative.
What struck me most about Dr. Kalam was his resilience. I remember reading how he aspired to become a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force, but ranked ninth when only eight positions were available. Such a failure would break many, but not Dr. Kalam. Instead, it became the fuel that ignited his journey toward becoming one of India’s greatest scientists.
In writing my book, "Dream Big, Fly High: 55 Journeys to Inspire Young Minds," I knew Dr. Kalam’s story had to be included. His life is a testament to the power of perseverance, education, and self-belief. What makes him even more special is his connection with young people. Wherever he went, Dr. Kalam made it a point to meet students and inspire them to become responsible citizens, to dream big, and to work hard to achieve those dreams.
Not many people know that Dr. Kalam was deeply invested in the welfare of society, especially in healthcare. His visits to Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai and LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad were part of his mission to reduce preventable blindness in India. He believed that every citizen had the right to good vision, and he worked tirelessly to inspire ophthalmologists to eradicate preventable blindness. His contributions went far beyond the scientific sphere, touching the lives of millions through education and health initiatives.
Dr. Kalam’s ability to remain humble, even after achieving so much, is what makes him a true role model for me and for countless others. He always referred to himself as a teacher first, and that’s how he wanted to be remembered. I hope his story continues to inspire young minds around the world, as it has inspired mine.
