
On World Hypertension Day, May 17, 2025, let’s unite to fight the "Silent Killer" — high blood pressure. The theme, “Measure your blood pressure correctly, control it, and live longer,” is not just a slogan but a lifesaving call. According to WHO, 1.28 billion people worldwide suffer from hypertension, nearly half unaware of their condition. In India, the situation is more alarming with 188 million affected, but only 15% have it under control. This condition silently damages the heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes without obvious symptoms. As an eye surgeon, I have witnessed how hypertension affects the retina’s tiny blood vessels, leading to blurred vision or even permanent blindness. Often, people discover their condition only after serious complications like brain hemorrhage or kidney failure. Therefore, every adult over 30 must get their blood pressure checked regularly.
