On World Hypertension Day, May 17, 2025, let’s unite to fight the "Silent Killer" — high blood pressure. The theme, “Measure your blood pressure correctly, control it, and live longer,” is not just a slogan but a lifesaving call. According to WHO, 1.28 billion people worldwide suffer from hypertension, nearly half unaware of their condition. In India, the situation is more alarming with 188 million affected, but only 15% have it under control. This condition silently damages the heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes without obvious symptoms.

As an eye surgeon, I have witnessed how hypertension affects the retina’s tiny blood vessels, leading to blurred vision or even permanent blindness. Often, people discover their condition only after serious complications like brain hemorrhage or kidney failure. Therefore, every adult over 30 must get their blood pressure checked regularly. This simple step can save lives.

But checking alone isn’t enough. A healthy lifestyle is vital — regular exercise, balanced diet low in salt and rich in fruits and vegetables, avoiding smoking and alcohol, adequate sleep, and stress management. Those diagnosed must take prescribed medication without fail. Eye check-ups twice a year are essential to detect early retinal damage.

This World Hypertension Day, let’s pledge to raise awareness and adopt healthy habits for ourselves and our families. Don’t ignore blood pressure — the silent killer that can end lives quietly. Awareness, regular monitoring, timely treatment, and positive lifestyle changes can defeat this threat.
